How to Get More Out of The Moment

How to Get More Out of The Moment

Always be present and never miss the moment.

It’s funny how simple that is in theory, but it seems that especially in today’s digital age we are always distracted and our minds and thoughts somewhere else besides wherever we actually are.

I am a very true example of this. I am after all a very “digital” girl. I always say it. It’s a passion of mine – emerging technology. I am always needing to be connected, always afraid to miss something going on elsewhere, always looking for more and more information or entertainment – so much so that many times I do miss the moment. I miss the brilliance of the time I get to spend with those who matter most, my friends and loved ones, my work when it drives my passion. I miss the magical moments that life gives us like the sun shining down on my skin, the rain on my face during a shower, the way a candle flame dances with the shadows.

If we can remember just once in a while – just now and again – to put down the cellphone, stop playing games or reading our emails and texts, step away from the computer and just ‘be’ where we are in that moment. If we can really be there and really see where we are – even if it’s a difficult moment – an impossible moment like the loss of love, loved one, health or anything that causes pain – we can learn from it… we can grow from it. We can “become”.

But to “become” we have to first “be” there… and really see it.

Watch this wonderful (yes, it will take 30 precious minutes out of your day) video of Arianna Huffington at Wisdom 2.0 where she speaks to what really should drive our measurements of personal success.

After you watch, make sure you get a copy of two great inspirational books she wrote:
Thrive” (Her most recent) and “On Becoming Fearless…in Love, Work, and Life” (one of my very favorites)

A great quote by Iain Thomas that Arianna Huffington mentions in this video rings so true:
“And every day, the world will drag you by the hand, yelling, “This is important! And this is important! And this is important! You need to worry about this! And this! And this!” And each day, it’s up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, “No. This is what’s important.” ― Iain Thomas

Innovation and the Little Picture

Innovators come in all areas of business. From those bold enough to try somethings straight out of a sci-fi novel (3D printing, cars the drive themeselves, Google Glass, smart phones), those who accidentally created something new (velcro, popsicles, potato chips) all the way to the person just trying to solve a little problem and coming up with something that turns the marketplace upside down (grommets, kongs, and even Greek yogurt).

It’s not about coming up with the “BIGGEST NEW THING IN THE WORLD” up front, but sometimes just looking around you at the little picture and skewing your angle just enough to see where there is a void that can be filled with something more helpful that what is out there now. The next time you are looking for new ways to increase your marketshare or revenue stream, how about not only working to move the needle, but maybe get rid of the needle altogether and use a rod instead.

What does your business really have to offer? Now let’s bring it into the Interactive space in a big way and really disrupt the way the market moves.
